Which of the “characters” in this documentary do you most closely relate to?  Why?

Which of your friends, family members, coaches or teachers have similar qualities to a character? Which one/ones, and Why or How are they similar?

How is the location and running of a school important to small towns?  Why do you think WC has an elementary school in Humboldt?  Why aren’t all of our district’s students going to school in Hartford?

Do you think a “Big Idea” like this one is possible in our community?  Why or Why Not?

Which group or groups in our district would get the kind of support from the community that Wildorado got to make something Big like this happen?

How can we improve the community support for all groups/activities at WC – especially the Ag Program and the FFA? What challenges do we face in cultivating and keeping that kind of community support?

Final thoughts about the documentary – tell me what you thought, felt, were or are curious about…..

2020

Welcome to an entirely new decade!  What will YOU accomplish in 2020?  Where do you see yourself at the end of this shiny new decade? What do you think will be different in our country; our world?  Will we have people actually living in space? Will we visit another planet, or the moon again?  Will people be starving to death in greater numbers, or will agriculture and science find away to further boost production to feed the masses?  What do you believe will happen in the political arena?  Do you believe we may see a female President of the United States by the end of the decade?  What will education and public schools “look like” by 2030? Many of us set “new years resolutions” and then promptly forget about them by the beginning of February.  What are your resolutions or goals for 2020?

Lots of things to think about and questions to answer.  Your post is due Friday, January 3, 2020 by 3:00 p.m.

Lifting Spirits

Life has been pretty stressful for me the past six weeks or so.  My mom is not doing well and her lack of ability to remember things and simply take proper care of herself are frustrating for me and really makes me sad.  I struggle with my feelings of anger about it.  I’m angry with myself when I get angry with her for not remembering something or calling me four times in ten minutes to tell me the same thing.  I’m angry with her when all she eats is ice cream and then can’t figure out why she’s got an upset stomach.  I know that there are a lot of her issues that she simply can’t help.  But she’s not my mom anymore either. She’s not the cast iron woman that raised my brother and I, made us mind, do the right thing, disciplined us when we needed it, etc.  Don’t get me wrong – she’s really a nice lady —— NOW. She spent 35+ years as an OR surgical nurse.  She knows, or used to know that too much sugar and ice cream or cookies are not good for her blood sugar.  But now – she eats them anyway.  Partly because she can’t remember that she just ate ice cream ten minutes ago, so gets out another bowl and helps herself.

So, what’s the point of all this?  When I get down, there are things that help me lift my spirits.  Usually, it’s all of you.  I really do enjoy my job, and love getting to work with all of you.  You are usually just the “medicine” I need to put a smile back on my face.  Imagine my disappointment when you aren’t living up to my expectations of you and you can no longer help to lift my depression….

What lifts your spirits when you are down?

Thanksgiving – Food, Food, and more Food!

Thanksgiving Roast Turkey Dinner

Read these articles:

One

Two

On your blog, react to the following:

Why does the cost of Thanksgiving remain the same, despite the trying times farmers have faced in the last year? Find out how much money goes back to the farmer. (there are links in the article that will be helpful) Reflect on why you think this number is the way it is, and how do you think it can get higher. How did some of your favorite Thanksgiving foods get to the US?  Or – where did they originate? How do you think that Thanksgiving and every day would be different if these foods were never brought to the United States?

On This Day…..

On this day in history; some pretty noteworthy things happened.

1963 – President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, TX and Lyndon B. Johnson became President of the United States.

In 1906 – Morse code SOS became a worldwide standard.

In 1950 Two Long Island Railroad (LIRR) commuter trains collide in the Richmond Hills section of Queens killing 79 people.

In 1986: Mike Tyson becomes the youngest Heavyweight Champion in history today with a second round knockout win over Trevor Berbick.

1988 : The Northrop B-2 “stealth” bomber is shown publicly for the first time at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. The aircraft had a wingspan of nearly 150 ft but its radar signal was as negligible as that of a bird. The B-2 also successfully evaded infrared, sound detectors, and the visible eye.

1995: Toy Story produced by Pixar is released as the first feature-length film created completely using computer generated animation. The film was not only a commercial success it was given great ratings by critics and won a number of awards including an Academy Special Achievement Award in 1996 for the first feature-length computer-animated film.

Our country and world have been shaped by many things that have occurred throughout time. The list above are just a handful of things that happened on November 22nd.

For today, reflect on the following on your blog:

The Starving Baker

Why is the story of the Starving Baker ironic?  What things keep people from taking time for their own self care and personal growth?  In what times have you really needed someone to help pick you up and get you back on track?  Who picked you up?  How did they help you? Explain the story of “sharpening the axe”?  How does this analogy apply to your own life? Which people in your life help you to “sharpen your axe”? What things can you do to increase or work on self care and your own personal growth? What obstacles will you have to overcome?

Twice?

Tell me about a time when you made the same mistake twice.  Was there a chore your parents asked you to complete and you failed to follow through? Have you gotten lazy and figured you could make it to your destination without filling your car with gas and then things didn’t work out the way you planned?  Have you failed, repeatedly, to complete assignments and then you are shocked to find yourself staying on a Friday afternoon?  Have your mistakes cost you money? Have you brought an item to school that got you in trouble before, Bennett?

We all have dreams, goals and wishes; and of course, we hope they come true!  What are some that you have?  Are there dreams or wishes that you used to think were important and now aren’t as important to you or important at all? Have your goals changed?  Have your priorities changed?

Tell me all about it.
