Fake Meat Legislation

A bill introduced I the Kansas House of Representatives would prohibit “fake meat” companies from using terms like beef, pork, steak or bacon unless the products include disclaimers that they contain no meat.

The bill is supported by the Kanas Livestock Association, which says it will ensure fair competition and eliminate consumer confusion. Opponents say it’s unnecessary and will limit how new products can be marketed.

A growing number of states have approved or are considering bills restricting how meat alternatives are labeled.
