Food Inc. 2

Today we’ll watch Unintended Consequences and The Dollar Menu.

Unintended Consequences:

•Who is responsible for keeping our food safe?

•Any ideas for ways to improve that system?

The Dollar Menu:

•The film gives the impression that food is either cheap or healthy. Do you think it is true that food is either one or the other, or is this a false dichotomy?

•How does the cheap price of processed food affect low-income families? Is
this fair?

• Do you think healthy eating should be a right, a responsibility, or a privilege?

Semester Wrap Up- Food Inc.

We’ll be watching Food Inc. over the next four days.  Each day there will be a response to post on your blog.  This will be our Semester Post.  All posts must be done on time!

Fast Food to All Food:

• Are there any rights that all animals should have?

• If animals should have certain rights, do you think those rights also apply to animals we raise for food, like chickens or pigs? Are there any rights that these farm animals should have? If so, what are they?

• How do you think farm animals should be treated? How do your ideas compare to what you saw in the film?

•Richard Lobb of the National Chicken Council says in the film, “In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” What does this statement mean? Do you agree or disagree with it? How might this perspective affect the way that chickens are raised?

• If we are in consensus that even food animals deserve to have a certain quality of life, who has the responsibility to oversee the treatment of chickens or other food animals? What responsibility do individuals and consumers have? The government? Companies?

• If we are in consensus that food animals should not have rights to a certain quality of life, what might be some repercussions of that position?

• As consumers, do we have the right to know how the chickens we eat are being raised? Do we want to know?

• As portrayed by the film, consumers wanting faster, cheaper food has altered the way chickens are raised. Can you think of parallel situations where consumers wanted certain products or experiences, and industry responded to meet the demand? (For example, we want to have inexpensive clothes,so companies hire low-wage workers in other countries to make them; when people became increasingly concerned about air pollution from vehicles, companies created hybrid-fueled cars.)

• We’ve been talking about the rights of food animals. What did the film bring up about people’s rights?

A Cornucopia of Choices:

• In the film, food science professor Larry Johnson says, “If you go and look on the supermarket shelf, I’ll bet you 90 percent of [the products] would contain either a corn or soybean ingredient. And most of the time, it’ll contain both.”

Why might it be a problem that the majority of our food is made mostly from just corn and soybeans—so that nearly everything we eat contains them?
Why might it be a problem that the majority of our food is made mostly from just corn and soybeans—so that nearly everything we eat contains them?

• Many of us were surprised to learn that corn is so prevalent in our foods. Why do you think we were so surprised? Do you think the government and food producers have kept it a secret? Why don’t more people know this fact?

• Whose responsibility do you think it is to inform us about what is in our food?

• Is it our responsibility to find out, the producer’s responsibility to make it more clear, or both? Why do you think so?

• If people are responsible for informing themselves about what is in their food, what would help them be more informed? If producers are responsible, what would be the more effective ways for them to inform people?

• The movie points out that cows and farm-raised fish, which are not biologically suited to eating corn, are now given a modified diet that is based on corn. Do you think people’s diets have been modified in a similar way? How do you feel about the possibility of your food being modified without you being aware of it?

To ___________________ Brotherhood

6663947_orig

Fill in the blanks:

FFA members, why are we here?

To __________________ brotherhood, honor ___________________ opportunities and ___________________ and _____________________ those ____________________ of __________________________ which an ______________ member should ____________________.

What does it mean to “practice brotherhood”?  How do you demonstrate this?  How does the FFA help to foster the development of brotherhood? Are their other organizations that are known for developing brotherhood among their members?

Failure and Growth

Learning to deal with disappointment.

There’s a pretty infamous list of Abraham Lincoln’s failures throughout his life.  I’ve always considered our 16th President to be one of the most successful and integral to the strength and success of our country.  It’s really hard to think of him as being a failure.

Here’s a brief list of some of Abraham Lincoln’s failures (along with a few successes):

  • 1831 – Lost his job
  • 1832 – Defeated in run for Illinois State Legislature
  • 1833 – Failed in business
  • 1834 – Elected to Illinois State Legislature (success)
  • 1835 – Sweetheart died
  • 1836 – Had nervous breakdown
  • 1838 – Defeated in run for Illinois House Speaker
  • 1843 – Defeated in run for nomination for U.S. Congress
  • 1846 – Elected to Congress (success)
  • 1848 – Lost re-nomination
  • 1849 – Rejected for land officer position
  • 1854 – Defeated in run for U.S. Senate
  • 1856 – Defeated in run for nomination for Vice President
  • 1858 – Again defeated in run for U.S. Senate
  • 1860 – Elected President (success)

No matter how old we are, we’re all going to face multiple disappointments throughout our lives. These can range from minor letdowns (not getting included by friends in an activity), to major life events (not being accepted to your top-choice college).

Disappointments are part of growing up and part of day to day life, and although it’s painful to watch our dreams getting dashed or witnessing our friends suffer when things don’t go their way, disappointment can actually be good for us, especially when we can learn how to bounce back so we can cope better for future letdowns.  I’ll try to remember that part about disappointment being good for me the next time things don’t go exactly the way I planned them!

Edison quote

Tell me about the disappointments you’ve survived this year or throughout your high school career.  What did you learn from them?  How did you deal with them, grow from them?  Did those disappointments change your goals or plans for the future?  Have past failures led you to consequent success?  Are their failures in your past, that today, don’t seem like that big of a deal?  Are their failures that caused you to throw up your hands and simply give up at something because it didn’t come easy right away? Tell me all about it.

Gluten Free

See info on the board and door regarding State FFA Convention.  The dates are Sunday through Tuesday, April 12-14.  Monday of convention week will be a Blue Day.

USDA-stalk-kernels2

Why are Kansas agriculturists working to develop a gluten free wheat variety?  How much are they investing in the research?  What is the current market value of the Gluten free industry?  What is the name of the disease associated with gluten reactions?  Is This disease more common today than in past generations?  If so, by how much?  What has happened to sales of gluten free foods in the past year or so?  How many protein fragments have been found to be responsible for Celiac reactions from wheat consumption?  What are the two portions of the current research in Kansas?  Do you believe that the popularity of the Gluten Free diet is more fad or actually necessary?  What are the claims of gluten free diets and can they be argued against?  Are there risks associated with following a Gluten free diet?  List and describe them please.

Welcome To Your First White Day In Ages!

A note about blog posts:

lazy-worker

Some of you are getting pretty lazy and not taking your blog posts as seriously as I had hoped.  I put a great deal of time into creating prompts and reading and grading your responses.  I get the feeling when reading some of your recent posts that you are not taking your posts seriously or think that it’s all just a joke.  If that’s the feeling I get when I read your post, your grade may reflect that.  Only 36 days of school left, five Mondays.  Keep working!

For today:

confrontation

Think of a time when you were personally confronted and challenged by someone.  Give an overview and then walk me through that situation, telling me about your part in it.  What did you think or feel?  What did you say or do?  What was the outcome?

Your post is due Friday, March 27th at 8:15 a.m.

We leave for Lennox on Tuesday (another White day) at 8:30 a.m.

If you are coming to the Lock-In PLEASE RSVP so that I have a clue how many to expect and how many I’m feeding!  You will also need a permission slip which you can get from me.

What does success look like?

882How do you define success?  What is your idea of a successful person?  Give me an example of someone you believe is successful.  Someone normal, in your everyday life.  I’m not looking for answers like Payton Manning or Steve Jobs, but someone you actually know.  Why do you believe that that person is successful?  What traits or habits can you take from that person’s behavior or life and integrate into your own to help yourself become more successful?

Your post is due at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, March 16, 2015

In other news – if you are planning to order a sweatshirt or sweat pants, please get your order info written on the door.  Payment due when they come in.

On Wednesday, next week, we leave for Flandreau at 8:30.  Bring money or lunch or both.  Casual dress.  The buses will NOT be staying so don’t bring more stuff than YOU want to keep track of.

What’s up with Corn?

What’s up with corn lately?  Certainly not the price!

539w

Read this article.

Some are blaming Syngenta, but why?  Read this article.

In YOUR OWN WORDS, what’s been happening with corn production and prices lately? What reasons can you give for what’s been happening?  What’s the current average price for corn in our area?  Does Syngenta offer a rebuttal, if so, what are they saying?

Lost?

Welcome to March and CDE Month!  Our preliminary CDES are March 18th, March 23rd, and March 31st.  Are you ready?  Will your performance be worth the financial cost to the chapter?

Have you logged into AET in the last two months?  Underclassmen – remember you need to upload four photos of you working in your SAE before school is out. Since February 2 – only 5 of you have logged in.

For today:

760

What is it that you feel lost without?  Is it your cell phone, your class ring? or is it something more abstract, a person, a feeling?  Is there a part of your daily routine; a workout, devotional time, super long shower etc. that when you get out of sync your entire day is messed up?  Does it take you a while to get back in the swing of things after a change – like going from Christmas break back into January and school?  Tell me all about it.
