Let’s compare two blog posts from the same prompt:
This was the prompt: What’s one opportunity you have now that you have not taken? Is it the ability to try something new, take an online or college class, go out for a team/club/activity? Or is it something less concrete? Tell me all about it. What’s been holding you back from stepping through the door that opportunity is presenting you?
First post
“one oppertunity i had that i didn’t take was National Honors Society. i shoulda done it my junior year, this year it woulda been pointless tho cuz i wouldn’t have been able to use it on any scholarships. last year I was 2 lazy to fill out the paperwork is why I din’t do it. at least I didn’t have to be in the NHS SRB though.”
Second post
“I am incredibly fortunate to have really supportive parents. They have let me do anything and everything that I have wanted to try (with the exception of Girl Scouts) in my entire life. From ballet and gymnastics to FFA and soccer they have always been on the sidelines cheering as loud as they could. The fact that they are always there is amazing considering the fact that they both wish that my main focus would involve the 4 legged creature living in the barn. The opportunities that I have to excel in rodeo and 4-H are endless. My parents would be 100% willing to pay hundreds of dollars for clinics and new equipment. However, I haven’t really taken advantage of the opportunity. I absolutely love riding, and competing but I have always known that I wouldn’t compete in college or anything like that. If there was an way that I could spend as much time with my horse as I do for soccer I would love it, but it simply not possible. Nevertheless I hope to be involved in the equine world forever, I couldn’t imagine my life without it.”
In comparing these two posts you’ll notice one is very brief and has several spelling or grammatical errors.
Notes about blog posts – Please – do not include correct names of people (friends) in your posts. This is to protect you and them. If your story that you’re writing about needs names, give them fake names rather than using their real names.
The word “I” is always capitalized.
Use complete words rather than slang – i.e.: going vs gonna
Use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Failing to do so will dock points from your post score.
First – go to your Dashboard. Follow these directions if you cannot find it.
NOTE- Please – go through the dashboard to create a post – many students had their posts disappear on them in previous years when they used the shortcut to post. Just in case you are not sure which shortcut I’m referring to, here’s what it looks like:
Again – Don’t Do it that way, Use the directions below, Please!
On the left hand side of your Dashboard, click on Posts
Then click “Add New”
Create a title and type your content in the body of the message.
Use the spell check button! Also – just for those of you who try to type the way you text – the word I is ALWAYS capitalized. You’ll be expected to write in complete sentences with correct punctuation, capitalization, spelling, etc. Mrs. Renner won’t be reading your posts so you can relax some, but, keep in mind, my Grandmother was a Grammar Professor, so I have a few skills myself!
Once you are happy with your post click on the “publish” button on the right hand side.
You can always go back in and edit your post.
Here are a few rules that we’ll need to follow:
1. For student blogs we will be using WordPress. WordPress is very user friendly and as you get more comfortable you can change and edit things so the design and style fits your preferences.
WordPress has a great, easy to follow tutorial for setting up your blog.
Styling your blog in WordPress becomes a game of learning to read code; some themes are more user friendly than others! I recommend starting with the default theme Twenty Ten. You will be able to add your own graphics and changes colors. Also, you can change the theme as you become more comfortable with it
2. Your blog may not contain your entire first and last name. Only first names or an appropriate nickname. Your blog url and title will be something like this:myblog.wordpress.com
3. All graphics must be school and FFA appropriate. No scantilly clad young men or women. If in doubt, ask!
4. Any music associated with your blog must also be school and FFA appropriate.
5. When posting to your blog, keep in mind that your blog is a reflection of you, your family, your school, our FFA Chapter and your FFA Advisor. Once it’s out on the web, it’s really hard to take it back! Keep all language appropriate, use spell and grammar check! If you are talking about a specific person (or classmate), don’t use that person’s real name.
Let’s begin by going to http://wordpress.com
2. Your blog may not contain your entire first and last name. Only first names or an appropriate nickname. Many students in the past have used their school email login, for example – lp3456.Your blog url and title will be something like this: myblog.wordpress.com If you enter a name or slug that is already in use you will get a screen something like this:
When you find a combination that works – WooHoo, you’ll get a screen like this:
Click on the link within the e mail you received.
We’ll get back to blog set up in a minute. Be sure to book mark the dashboard page! You will be using it again!
Before I totally turn you loose. Make note of these things:
Your blog url and the login url, something like this: myblog.wordpress.com/wp-login.php
Write down your user name and password!
When you need help, please ask.
Send me an email with a link to your blog (myblog.wordpress.com)
Happy Blogging!
Everyone MUST complete this survey today!
After you finish that, please work on your records. I’ll be grading you based on how much you have completed. You’ve had four weeks to be working on your records. By the time we are out of school next week you should have all of your records caught up. That means all hours worked, income, expenses, FFA and other activities since January of your freshman year. (or January of your first year of membership) Seniors are excluded from this assignment.
Here is a screenshot of the students who have entered some data for their SAE:
Just a little background. Our project is to grow vegetable plants that are given away with the understanding that people will donate their excess veggies to people in need or a food pantry etc.

Video Contest
Fact Sheet
We encourage you to be as dynamic, original, and creative as you can, however, you must base your video message around the topic & required fact listed below.
The topic of this year’s Video Contest is: GMO Safety.
It is required to include the following fact in your video:
• Over 25 years of independent research shows there is no evidence of harm to human health or deaths from consumption of GM foods.
Background Information
Biotechnology, or GMO, is one of the biggest buzzwords currently in the media. With most soybean and corn farmers planting biotech crops, it is extremely important for the agriculture community to help the general public understand the benefits of biotechnology. Your video submissions should be targeted to a general consumer audience, and not a farm audience.
The World Health Organization defines genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. It allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another, including between nonrelated species. Such methods are used to create GMO plants – which result in GMO food crops. This technology is called biotechnology. Farmers and gardeners have been creating plant hybrids for as long as they’ve been growing plants. Biotechnology simply serves as a more technologically advanced method.
Every plant improved through the use of food biotechnology involves extensive safety and environmental reviews by the FDA, EPA and USDA for potential health risks. Tests are done on plants before entering the food and animal feed supply. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that current foods containing biotech ingredients have passed human health risk assessments. In addition, the WHO says no effects on human health have been shown as a result of the consumption of biotech foods.
Currently it takes on average of 13.1 years and $136 million to develop, test and review a biotech crop before reaching the market place. According to the European Commission, “the main conclusion, after more than 130 research projects covering a period of more than 25 years of research and involving more than 500 independent research groups, is that biotechnology, in particular GMOs, are not per se more risky than, e.g., conventional plant breeding technologies.” Every major scientific body and regulatory agency in the world has reviewed the research about GMOs and openly declared crop biotechnology and the foods currently available for sale to be safe.
By developing special traits in plants, biotechnology allows for more food to be grown in more places using fewer chemicals and fewer natural resources. Biotechnology also allows farmers reduce crop protection applications, like herbicides and pesticides.
In South Dakota we are fortunate because many us have strong ties to agriculture. As FFA students, you understand that farm families take great care and pride in growing safe food for our tables, and biotechnology is one method that helps them do that. All video submissions should keep a positive tone, and not tell others what to eat. Videos should highlight the positive aspects of the safety of biotechnology for agriculture.

Tonight is the Banquet! We start at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons in OD.
Today we’ll be doing a bit of research on GMO Safety.
Check out this site and do some reading and video watching. What parts of the world, if any, lean more to the anti GMO side of things? See if you can find an online source that discusses the downfalls or safety issues of GMO products. List that site on your blog. Following your research, what’s your opinion of GMO’s? Do you think they are safe for human consumption or animal feeding?
Your post is due Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 8:30 a.m.
Please, keep working on entering data into your records!
Keep working on records! Only 6 white days left for non-seniors. The Banquet is Tuesday!
For today react to the following:
