It’s My Life!

We talked last week or so about things we care about and don’t care about.

What do you most care about in your personal and professional life right now? What things are important to you? What are your priorities? List your top 5 things in their order of importance to you. How might your list look different from friends and family? Have your priorities changed over the course of the year? Since you began high school? Why do you think your priorities have changed?

How Powerful are Your Words?

For today, take a look at this video:

On your blog, react to what you saw.  How have words made a difference in your life?  Is there a time when a different set of words could have changed everything much like the new words in the video.  They basically said the same thing, but in a different way.  We use words everyday to communicate a host of different ideas, emotions, and information.  How could you choose your words more carefully to convey your meaning in a better way?

An Excuse For Everything…

What things do you wish people would stop making excuses for? I get frustrated when people’s priorities don’t line up the way that I think they should. In one breath, they’ll tell me that this one thing is very important to them, but their actions which would lead them to success in this thing they claim to be passionate about, don’t line up. Where do your friends and family make excuses that drive you crazy? Do they put off spending time with you, or others? Do they always have something else to do instead of following through with plans you may have made? Does their inability or the fact that they are unwilling to prioritize things the same way you do, have an impact on you, your goals, success or progress toward goals?

Someone I can count on

Hopefully you were able to make it to school today.  I spent the bulk of my weekend in the backhoe.  That was fun, said no one ever!  I’m “hopefully” in Brookings scoring Proficiency Apps.  I will hopefully have at least some info to share with those of you that applied when I return.

CDE Season is upon us!  Tomorrow, February 26, 2019, I’ll have the sign up sheet up on the door for Tri Valley.   Check to make sure you are signed up on the Flandreau sheet if you are planning to compete.  I’ll register for both Tri Valley and Flandreau next week Wednesday!

For today:  Spend some time studying, please!

And:1331

Who has always been there for you when it felt like no one else was?  I’ve had my share of tough times in my life.  Last year – all of it – was hard on me and for me.  Part of what made it so hard was that some of the people I usually depended on, just weren’t there.  I felt very alone and really struggled with things that were going on and how I felt about them.  I ended up leaning on some of my students to confide in them and truly appreciate them propping me back up and pushing me back out into the world.  So – who do you depend on?  Who talks you off the cliff when you are ready to just be done with someone or something?  Who helps you to see reason when all you see is fury and anger at a situation?  Tell me all about it.  Your post is due Tuesday, February, 26, 2019 at 8:15 a.m.

Who Cares?

What’s something you don’t care about even though lots of other people seem to care about it?

Are you not “into” politics? Could care less about Fortnight or the current game that everyone is playing?  Are your friends in a tizzy over something that you don’t understand what the big deal is? Can Prom come and go and you really don’t care?  Prom-posals? Do your parents think some things are critical that you just don’t understand why?  Conversely, are there things you are really passionate about that others don’t understand or need to be educated about?  Tell me all about it!  Do you have friends that need to be educated about basic nutrition, agricultural practices, what really is a GMO etc?

Factory Farms???

china_630_0

This post will require you to do some research!

What is a factory farm?

How does the USDA classify the size of a farm?

Read this

How might you define a factory farm?  Which group or groups of society might buy into the factory farming idea?  Where does this idea come from?

Which organizations would like to convince the public that factory farms are the rule and not the exception?

What’s untrue about the argument that animals raised on factory farms are injured and deformed? Or that farmers don’t care for their animals?

Confinement operations are associated with “factory farming”.  Activists seem to believe that the confinement is to “keep the atrocities of what’s going on inside the barn from being seen by the public”.  What’s the real reason?

What percent of farms in American are family owned and operated?

CDE Prep – Test Bank Creation

We’re going to begin developing CDE prep test banks today. You will be developing test banks of 25 questions each for your chosen CDE.  Those not preparing for a specific CDE will be helping with some of the other CDEs.  Each test bank you create will be worth 20 points in the grade book.  We’ll be using tests that we already have either in the tubs, Google Classroom, online, or from the National CDE tests that have already been released. You won’t have to make up your own questions, just retype them into ExamView.  Let’s begin with State, Lennox, TriValley, and Flandreau CDE tests from 2018.

Got to Self Service and search for “examview”Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.04.39 AM

Select the ExamView Assessment Suite

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.05.51 AM

Install this software.  You will have to restart your computer after you install.

Once your computer is re-started, open ExamView Test Generator.  You’ll find it in your launch pad.

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.08.37 AM

Click on Create new question bank.

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.09.32 AM

Name your Test Bank with the  name of the CDE and a number.  Each subsequent test bank you create, will be the next number.  i.e.- NatRes 1, NatRes2, VetSci1, VetSci2, VetSci3, etc.

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.10.23 AM

Click OK

At the top, click on Question>New>Multiple Choice

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.11.53 AM

Write your question and possible answers in the form.

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.13.24 AM

Click the radio button in front of the correct choice.

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.14.27 AM

At the bottom, click “Record”

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.15.08 AM

Keep following the same process until you have typed in 25 questions.  When you have typed 25 questions, click File>Save As> Title your test bank VetSci1, or whatever is pertinent to your specific test bank.  Your computer will automatically save your test bank in the “banks” folder.  Once you have saved your test bank, email it to me.

If you need help, please ask.  Hopefully I’ve laid out the directions pretty simply for you.  I will be creating tests for members to study from by pulling random questions from the test banks we will be developing.  Feel free to develop more than one test bank today – as mentioned above – these will be worth 20 points each – a good way to boost your grade and make up for late or work that’s been less than excellent.

Oh SNAP! The New Farm Bill

Read this article

What is the Trump Administration hoping to do through the USDA’s responsibility in the new Farm Bill?  What is the SNAP program?  Who oversees it?  What is the value of the new Farm Bill?  How many Americans are served by the SNAP program? What is an ABAWD? What benefits are available currently to ABAWD’s through the SNAP program?  What changes may lie ahead for those people?  How does an area’s unemployment rate impact the rules?  What does the President want to ensure with changes to the SNAP program?  Who is “Perdue” who is referenced in the article?  Do you think those who qualify for SNAP benefits should be required to work in order to receive them?  Why or why not?

AET/SAE Due Dates etc

In Ag Leadership we are finishing up State Degree applications for seniors.  Records and applications must be complete before January 8, 2019.  Please stop in and spend some time with me if you need help completing your records or the application.

Your SAE records should be up to date before we leave for Christmas Break – there are points in the grade book for this.

Today, we all added a Proficiency Award Application to our AET profile.  Everyone will complete a proficiency application.  The will need to be complete on or before February 1, 2019.

We will be chunking the application into several due dates.  That information will be posted here on the Leadership Blog for your reference in a few days.

Here’s how to add a proficiency application:

Log into theat.com

Click on Reports

On the right hand side, under Annual Reports and FFA Apps, click on Degree Application Manager

Under Start a new application by choosing from dropdown menu, select Proficiency Application.

Click – Add New

Your applications panel will now show a proficiency application:

Click on the word application in front of proficiency

On left menu, click Proficiency Area

Read through the descriptions and select the area that fits the best for your SAE.  Many of you will be able to apply in numerous areas. Click Select

Begin working through the menu on the left hand side

Under basic set up, select the cluster that fits best for your award area

Under Chose AET experiences, tick the boxes next to the SAE (you may have more than one) that fits this with your award application.  Be sure to click the save selection button above.

Begin working through each menu item to complete your application.

Due dates will be established for each section of the application.
