Watch this video:

Who is the video about?  What medical condition does he suffer from?  What is the point of the video?  What causes the condition (you may have to do some research!) When have you felt that you had an obstacle that could not be overcome?  What is this individual doing now? What about his twin?  What can you learn from this story?  How might you have reacted if faced with this condition and disability?

Megatrends in Agriculture

Read this article

After reading, choose three of the outlined trends that interest you most.  Do a little additional research about those three trends and write about it on your blog.  How do you think your chosen trends will impact agriculture where we live?  How will these trends affect product pricing for consumers? Do you think legislation and government policy will play an active role in agriculture in the near future – why or why not?

Excuses…..

State Convention is a week away!  Keep studying – on in the case of some of you – it’s time to START studying!

We all make excuses for our behavior, lack of effort, tardiness, etc. all the time.  What things do you wish the people in your life would stop making excuses for and simply move on?  Is it your teachers who say they’re too busy to put your grades in Campus?  Is there something your parents make an excuse for repeatedly? Does a sibling or friend always have an excuse for everything?  Where are you guilty of excuse making?  What effort can you make to change that habit?

Too Much!

What’s something you are tired of seeing online?  Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter fill up my news feed with a lot of stuff I’m just plain tired of seeing.  Short of deactivating my accounts or blocking people who tend to overshare things I’m tired of seeing, my options seem limited.  What kinds of things are you tired of your friends, family, etc. posting about?  Does looking at other folks’ pictures of their food, vacation posts, political memes and opinions, complaints about the weather make you crazy?  Tell me all about it!

Mehhh…

What’s something that you really don’t care about that seems to be really important to your friends or acquaintances?  Is there a social media platform, game, phone type, vehicle, class, topic etc. that everyone else is obsessed with that you really don’t get or care about?  Is there something that you once were on the bandwagon about and now don’t really need in your life?

Tell me all about it.

Addiction and Poor Choices

I bet you are really wondering where this is going!  I know you frequently get frustrated with me, and perhaps, other adults in your life, when we ask you to put your phone down.  What is it about  the current generation that feels the need to capture EVERYTHING on a cell phone video or photograph?

In April of 2016, Laremy Tunsil, a tackle from Ole Miss watched his draft stock tumble, as well as his projected income in the NFL.  What caused the fall?  In part, Tunsil’s stock tumbled due to a video posted on Twitter which appeared to show Tunsil smoking marijuana with a bong and a smoke filled gas mask. The video was posted 13 minutes before the opening of the NFL draft and was posted on Laremy Tunsil’s own Twitter account.  Tunsil was projected to be selected first overall before the video and other questions about his integrity and character came into play.  Tunsil did confirm that the video was him.  Laremy Tunsil was finally selected 13th overall by the Miami Dolphins. Sportrac estimates that the video cost Tunsil about $8 million!

So, when is enough enough?  When should the cell phones be put down, or better yet – turned off?  What rules do you think would be appropriate for the use of cell phones in social situations?  Have you and your friends discussed what things are necessary to capture for posterity and which things maybe shouldn’t be photographed?

Truth in Relationships

We are all involved in a wide array of relationships.  It’s not just the boyfriend/girlfriend relationships that I’m talking about.  We all have a network of friends and family.  Our lives, happiness, and struggles are really all intricately entwined.  What are the most important “truths” about those relationships?  What are the key things that make things work with your parents, employer, teachers, friends, boyfriend or girlfriends?  What are your “deal-breakers”? What behaviors are just unacceptable in your eyes for those in your life?

For me – it’s cigarettes and other tobacco products.  My dad smoked most of my growing up life and we were finally able to force him to quit after open heart surgery at the age of 50.  I hated the fact that he always smelled like cigarette smoke.  I was angered by the fact that a medical doctor should know what cigarettes could and were doing to his body, but he still smoked. I struggle with people who can’t be honest.  Either with me, or frequently themselves.  If I like you, I like you for you, not who you think you should be or who you think others want you to be.  Being authentic is important in my friends and people I care about.

In the same way – we have “relationships” with the products we purchase and use.  What “truths” are important to you in advertising of those products?  Where does American agriculture need to do a better job in helping to develop strong relationships with consumers?  Where should that effort begin and what should it include.

More Proficiency Apps Needed

I’m attaching a breakdown of all the proficiency apps that were screened on Saturday during the Official Proficiency Screening.  The state awards 3 awards in each category.  In areas marked in Yellow, less than 3 apps were submitted.  We can submit apps in the low quota areas and I can hand carry them to judging on the 26th of February.  Any new applications that we complete cannot place above an application that was submitted prior to screening on February 10th.  There could still be some cash in it for some of you.

Proficiency Award areas needed one or more applications:

Dicamba – or no?

Read or view these two stories:

Part 1

Part 2

On your blog – fill me in on what the big deal is. What is Dicamba? What are Dicamba Soybeans?  Why was the development of Dicamba beans necessary? Who produces it? Is there legislation regarding Dicamba in South Dakota?  Do you have any personal experience with Dicamba? Did your family or neighbor plant Dicamba Soybeans this year?  What’s your opinion on the matter?
