Taking things for granted

5981411975212842vFHeKjrQc

What things do you take for granted?  Do you just assume people will be there for you when you have not been there for them?  What “things” from “yesterday” do you wish you had back?  Have you had a falling out with a friend and things just aren’t the same anymore?  Are the things that are important to you today different from those that were priorities for you 12 months ago? What things about school will you miss this summer, or next year when you are graduated and off on your own in school or work? Do your parents provide you with things that you frequently forget to thank them for?  Have you worked in a group situation where your other group members allowed you to do more than you share of the work?  Did they appreciate what you did to help them achieve a good grade?  Conversely, have you been one of the bystanders that simply let someone else do the work and then step up to reap the reward?  Do you treat people the way you want to be treated?

Lots to think about and react to today.  Your post is due Friday, May 6, 2016 at 8:15 a.m.

Going in Circles

2174919

Have you had experiences in your life where the same old issue keeps coming up again and again?  Sometimes I feel like I’m going in circles; dealing with an issue, then dealing with the very same issue about 2 months later.  Some of the most complicated relationships and issues we’ll ever deal with involve family and friends.  What issues do you deal with in your life that just when you think you’ve got it handled and can put it on the back shelf, it rears its ugly head again?  some of you are just beginning to get into this kind of “fun”.  You’ll head off to college and share a very small space with another human being who may not share your love of late night homework or pizza binging.  There will be conflict!  How will you deal with that conflict in the future. Is there one thing that your parents just keep bringing up, over and over again?  Tell me all about it!

Proficiency Application Updates

We’ll be working on updating and improving proficiency applications for the coming days.  Below are links to sample placement and combined applications as well as the rubric for placement applications.  Spend some time with the rubric and your application and make some improvements to help you earn more points.  Those of you advancing to national competition will have to have your applications complete before school gets out.  If this means shooting more photos and rewriting captions – make sure you plan for that.

$5 Challenge

Could you make a positive impact on your community with just $5? That’s the question agriculture teacher Robin Grundmeyer asked senior FFA members at Norco High School in California when she started the school’s $5 Challenge eight years ago.

The $5 Challenge is now an annual tradition for the senior class, and students look forward to it all through high school.

“I wanted to create a capstone senior project that involves service, supply and demand, and needs versus wants,” Grundmeyer says. “I had read online about a teacher doing a similar class project, so I tweaked it to incorporate community service.”

NorCo FFA $5 Challenge

Every January, Grundmeyer gives each senior FFA member the project rules and requirements with a $5 bill stapled to it. They have until April to complete the challenge either alone or in a group, and they are required to give a presentation to a panel of judges about what they did with the money. Winners receive gift cards.

“The judges are school administrators, city council members and people from our community,” Grundmeyer says. “That helps get the word out about the project.”

Students often team up in groups of four or five. They can also ask for help from community members and local businesses.

“One year, some students put on a carnival in our school parking lot, and they donated all the money they raised to the local animal shelter,” Grundmeyer says. “Kids have sold carnations at school to support the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. One student made and sold hair bows to support the Wounded Warrior Project. A lot of kids get additional donations, and one girl donated her money to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in memory of her aunt.”

The possibilities are endless, and the results have been impressive. In 2015, 42 students turned $210 of seed money into more than $1,200, which was donated to various community organizations and charities. They also donated more than 500 hours of their time to the community.

Snow Cone Anyone?

Diane Vavala, a recent graduate of Norco High School, completed the $5 Challenge in spring 2015.

“We formed a group of 10 students, so we had $50 to start with,” Diane says. “It was really hot outside, so we decided to rent a snow cone machine and sell snow cones for $1 at lunch. We did it over three days, and we made more than $300.”

The students sold snow cones in several flavors, including blue raspberry, sour apple, cotton candy and bubble gum.

“We had kids lining up to buy them,” Diane says. “It was so successful that we rented out the snow cone machine a second time to see how much more money we could raise.”

What could you do to benefit our community with 5 bucks?  Which ideas in the article do you think would work here, why or why not?  What changes would you make to the rules of the project?  Tell me all about it on your blog.  Your post is due Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 8:15 a.m.

Labeling Food – No, not GMOs Jordan!

I still need Thank You letters from the following people:

Erica – 2 scholarship thank you letters

Thank you letters are due today!

For today:  We’ve talked a lot about GMO labeling this year.  One thing we haven’t discussed is whether current labeling should change to reflect other information on the label.

According to a story by Lester Holt of NBC Nightly News : Most people are unaware of just how much work it takes to shed the calories from some of their favorite snacks and beverages — but a study has found that simplified exercise labeling, can change people’s awareness and behavior.

Watch the video below:  If it doesn’t play, that’s not a big deal.

NBC shared this graphic to show the amount of exercise it would take to burn off some of these favorite snacks:

Do you think changing food labels to reflect how long it would take you to burn the calories you consume would make a difference in your food choices, or those of your friends and family? Does the information presented surprise you?  Will it make you think twice before biting into that cinnamon roll?  What favorite snacks are worth the extra exercise to you? Do you think adding these kinds of labels would make a difference in the US in our obesity rate?  What is the current obesity rate in the US? What about South Dakota?  A couple of years ago, a study was done in our school district that found that 44% of students in grades K-12 were obese or overweight.  What do you think about that?  What’s the difference between overweight and obese?

Stuck in an Elevator!

One week from right now we’ll be waiting to hear the results of all of the CDEs at State Convention!  Can you believe it’s almost here already?  Are you ready?

Several years ago, when National FFA Convention was still in Kansas City, and Laura Alderson – Nordlund was serving as the State FFA Treasurer, she got stuck in the elevator of the downtown Holiday Inn.  For several hours!  Three years ago or so, several of our members had an altercation with the elevator in Fort Pierre.  Seems like WCFFA maybe has some issues with elevators?

1063I’ve had the opportunity to meet some really cool, and semi-famous people in elevators around the world.  This is kind of like the who would you like to have dinner with question.  So – Who – from any time in history – alive or dead – would you like to be stuck in an elevator with for an hour?  Why did you chose that person (or people)?  What questions would you ask them?  What things would you like to learn from them?  What would you like them to know about you? Would you snap a selfie with your person or people? Do you think you would be able to build enough rapport with this person to remain in contact with them, or would you simply be glad to get away from them?

Why am I bothering?

I’m beginning to wonder why I spend time laying things out on the blog for you?

From last week’s post:

Please log into AET and get caught up with records and FFA etc activities TODAY!  Most of us haven’t touched AET since February 18th. Many of you have paychecks, hours of work – paid or unpaid, community service hours, FFA activities, etc to enter.  Maybe you even have a new SAE that you need to get started in AET.

Here’s a screen shot of who has actually logged in since March 23rd.

Screen Shot 2016-03-30 at 8.17.15 AM

Keep in mind that any CDEs you’ve competed in can be quickly added to your resume in a matter of a couple of clicks.  If you need help doing this, let me know.

On your blog:

Tell me what you entered into AET.

State Convention is a week an a half away!  What are you doing to make sure that you are ready to compete at your highest level?

What assistance do you need from me?

If you are not preparing for a CDE – what have you been doing with your class time in Ag Leadership? How should I grade your effort?

Guns

Several things for each of you to take care of today:

If you have not yet created test banks from the tests from Flandreau and Tri Valley, please do that today!  I’ve only gotten a couple of them – that means most of you should have something to do this morning that does not involve Craigslist, games, your phone, or any number of other things!

There are still CDEs to study for.  I’ll be creating and uploading new tests to the Google Classrooms today and in the coming days.

Also for today:

881The recent attack in Brussels killed at least 30 and left an additional 230 injured. The Tri Valley School Board is discussing a policy that would arm one or more of their teachers with a hand gun.

What are your thoughts?  If everyone carried a gun, would there be more or less shootings?  Would a hand gun have made a difference in Brussels?  What do you think about one of your teachers carrying a concealed hand gun everyday at school?  Do you believe that you are in danger here at school?  Do you think that you may someday be a victim of a terrorist attack?  Are there things that could happen in the future which would change your opinion – make it more or less likely that American will be a terrorist attack target?
