Read this article.

What is the article about?  Hit the high points.  Why is this ironic?  Do a bit of research about E. coli. What is it, what causes it, what symptoms may be exhibited by a patient who has consumed something contaminated with E. coli?

Others

REMINDER – your BIG Idea was due on Monday, October 26, 2015!

Leadership CDE materials are due November 4th!

Today’s post is about others.

You-have-not-lived-today-until-you-have-done-something-for-someone-who-can-never-repay-you.

Have you ever thought about the things others do for you?  Tell me about a time, or two, when you did something nice or good for someone else?  Did you expect anything in return? Did that person bother to thank you or appreciate what you had done for them?  Conversely, what things have others done for you that made a difference in your life?  Were you appreciative at the time or did it take some time to realize that what another person had done was for your benefit?  Do you think others who have been nice to you, created opportunities for you, or opened doors to new opportunities for you expected much in return?  Tell me about a time when someone else made a positive difference in your life with their words or actions.  Our lives are about Service.  Service to those around us.  It’s not all about what’s in it for me, it’s more about what can I do for others by serving them and improving their situation, life, or experiences.

So – next time someone goes out of their way for you, remember to say Thank you.  It’s the only repayment they’ll get and means more than anything to simply know that their actions have been noticed and appreciated.

How has this chain’s stance changed in the last week to ten days?

Finally, Read this article.

What’s your opinion on the issue?  Will Subway’s change in stance change your willingness to spend your money at their restaurants?  How do you feel about their backpedaling and changing their viewpoint?  Why do you think they retracted or clarified their statement?  Do you think the issue would have an impact on their sales?  How are medicines in meat, milk, and eggs regulated?  If you are allergic to Penicillin are you in danger when eating food produced in the U.S.

What is it that you can’t wait for?  Why is that occasion or thing something you are excited about?  Will you life change in the days preceding the event or occasion?  if so, how?  Has there been a time when that thing you couldn’t wait for turned out to be less than you imagined it would be?  Have the things you’re excited about changed as you’ve gotten older?  Do you view them differently than you did when you were in elementary school?  Tell me all about it!

Your BIG Idea is due – submitted – by October 26th!

All this talk about GMOs may have you believing that just about every food we reach for is considered a GMO.  How many GMO crops are there really?

cotton_field-wallpaper-1280x768

Read this article to find out.  List the GM crops in your blog post.  Which GM crop is the only one that is grown in Europe?  Which GM crop is not currently grown anywhere in the world?  What is the product produced from Rapeseed (Canola)?  Which GM crop is likely to be grown in Europe soon?  Which countries are the primary growers of GM Cotton?  What is the real reason that 80% of the world’s Rice fields are flooded?

Read this article.  What two basic categories of GMO crops do they discuss?  Which crops have developed a Bt variety?  What is BT, what does it do?  What is a “stacked” crop?

Which GM crop has had the fasted growth in acres planted over the past 20 or so years?

In 2015, what percent of acres in the US were planted to each of the following:

HT Soybeans, HT Cotton, Bt Cotton, Bt Corn, HT Corn

P.S. You may have to read more on each site than just the initial linked pages to find the answers.

To Label or Not to Label?

Keep working on your BIG Idea – is it due October 26th!  Also, how is your progress coming on Leadership CDEs?  If in doubt, re-read the expectations here.

We’re going to dig a little deeper into the issue of GMO labeling.  I’ve found a couple of articles that are either in favor of or against GMO food labeling.  Read them here:

Article one

Article two

gmo-food1

What are the arguments made by each organization?  Why do they believe that foods containing GMOs should be required to note it on the label?  Conversely, why do some believe that it is not necessary?  What arguments can you make for each side? Which organizations are involved in these two articles? What other groups might be interested or impacted by this issue?

Food Fight!

food_fight_jy_02_t640Read this article.

What is the article about?

Who is the sponsor of the bill?  From which political party do they come?  Is there companion legislation to this proposed bill? If so, what does that bill do?  What is the likelihood that the legislation will make any headway?  Are there arguments for and against this piece of legislation?  if so – what are they? What is your opinion on the issue?

Keep working on your BIG Idea and Leadership CDEs!

What am I expecting?

dangerous-expectations

Let’s compare three blog posts from the same prompt:

This was the prompt: What’s one opportunity you have now that you have not taken?  Is it the ability to try something new, take an online or college class, go out for a team/club/activity?  Or is it something less concrete? Tell me all about it.  What’s been holding you back from stepping through the door that opportunity is presenting you?

First post

“i wish i had gone out for foot ball”

Second post

“one oppertunity i had that i didn’t take was National Honors Society.  i shoulda done it my junior year, this year it woulda been pointless tho cuz i wouldn’t have been able to use it on any scholarships.  last year I was 2 lazy to fill out the paperwork is why I din’t do it.  at least I didn’t have to be in the NHS SRB though.”

Third post

“I am incredibly fortunate to have really supportive parents. They have let me do anything and everything that I have wanted to try (with the exception of Girl Scouts) in my entire life. From ballet and gymnastics to FFA and soccer they have always been on the sidelines cheering as loud as they could. The fact that they are always there is amazing considering the fact that they both wish that my main focus would involve the 4 legged creature living in the barn. The opportunities that I have to excel in rodeo and 4-H are endless. My parents would be 100% willing to pay hundreds of dollars for clinics and new equipment. However, I haven’t really taken advantage of the opportunity. I absolutely love riding, and competing but I have always known that I wouldn’t compete in college or anything like that. If there was an way that I could spend as much time with my horse as I do for soccer I would love it, but it’s simply not possible. Nevertheless I hope to be involved in the equine world forever, I couldn’t imagine my life without it.”

In comparing these posts you’ll notice one is too short and didn’t really answer most of the questions. The second is also very brief and has several spelling or grammatical errors.  The other is a bit more thoughtful and explains what the writer is talking about in greater detail.  The second writer also makes fewer grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors.

Let this serve as a reminder that I’m not asking you to do brain surgery here, but I am expecting you to put forth some effort!  I realize that on some posts you simply won’t have as much to say as on others.  That’s OK.

For today:

1178

What’s something that you tend to always procrastinate in doing? Why is it that one thing that you drag your feet on?  Does the fact that your Mom nags you about cleaning your room give you just enough motivation to NOT do it? That’s how it was for me. Is there a certain subject that you just hate doing the homework for so you put it off?  Or, is it that the work is easy for you and you are certain you can finish it quickly so you leave it for last?  Has your procrastination habit gotten you in trouble in the past?  Tell me all about it.

Where I Live

Keep working, or START, on your BIG Idea and Leadership CDEs.  If you are interested on being on this year’s Ag Issues (7) or Ag Communications (3) teams, let me know!  Both teams need to get started very soon!

If you are interested in Land Judging – get a cheat sheet and start studying!  Districts are Tuesday, September 22!

When responding to Ag Leadership prompts – be sure you are answering all of the questions.  You should be writing more than a sentence or two.  Do some writing and thinking!

For Today:

1181

Some day, you may move away from Hartford and Humboldt.  We’re pretty lucky here, Sioux Falls is close enough that we’ve got about anything we could want – except a Cheesecake Factory!  We’ve also got Rural America right in our back yards.  In your future, where can you see yourself living? What things will you want close by?  Would you be able to survive two hours away from the closest Subway, Pizza Ranch, or Wal-Mart?  Will you be able to be self sufficient enough that you don’t have to run to the grocery store two or three times a week for snacks or meals – because you won’t be able to?  How might your life change if you moved to the “big city”? Do you think you’d like it there?  What things would you be apprehensive about if you lived in someplace like Chicago, Atlanta, or Phoenix?  Conversely, what would your life look like if you lived out in Faith, Eagle Butte, or Phillip?
