It’s Test Bank Time!

We’re going to begin developing CDE prep test banks today. You will be developing test banks of 25 questions each for your chosen CDE.  Those not preparing for a specific CDE will be helping with some of the other CDEs.  Each test bank you create will be worth 20 points in the grade book.  We’ll be using tests that we already have either in the tubs, Google Classroom, online, or from the National CDE tests that have already been released. You won’t have to make up your own questions, just retype them into ExamView.

Got to Self Service and search for “examview”Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.04.39 AM

Keep following the same process until you have typed in 25 questions.  When you have typed 25 questions, click File>Save As> Title your test bank VetSci1, or whatever is pertinent to your specific test bank.  Your computer will automatically save your test bank in the “banks” folder.  Once you have saved your test bank, email it to me.

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 8.17.52 AM

If you need help, please ask.  Hopefully I’ve laid out the directions pretty simply for you.  I will be creating tests for members to study from by pulling random questions from the test banks we will be developing.  Feel free to develop more than one test bank today – as mentioned above – these will be worth 20 points each – a good way to boost your grade and make up for late or work that’s been less than excellent.

***** We will leave for Flandreau next week Wednesday, March 16th at 8:00 a.m.  Bring lunch or money (or both), bring a PENCIL – we will be using scansheets and results will be available on judging card.  Dress appropriately for the weather.  Be here early enough to grab a clipboard if you will need one.  Keep track of your clipboard and make sure it gets back to the classroom.  We should be back around 3.  I’ll be checking grades with Mr. Boyens to make sure you are eligible.

Your first test bank is due Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 8:15 a.m.

Pain and Sacrifice

Sacrifice!  Most things that are worth anything to us involve at least some sacrifice.  Sometimes that sacrifice comes in the form of pain – either physical or mental – or both!

548What accomplishments are worth that pain and sacrifice?  What goals have you set to help your dreams become reality?  What things have you learned in working toward your goals in one area that can be used in reaching a goal in a different area?  How do you work toward those accomplishments?  Tell me all about it!

Please!  Be using your time to study and prepare for CDEs!

Nervous!

From here through State Convention we’ll be spending a lot of time on CDE  preparation.  Be sure to use your time wisely and find the will power to avoid doing all those other things in class that are not related to studying for CDEs.

1089

What’s a possibility that makes your nervous?  It’s an election year – sometimes those possibilities really scare the bajeebies out of me!  What about you?  Does the thought of graduation excite and scare you?  Things don’t always turn out like we’ve planned, dreamed, or hoped.  How do we deal with those realities? Tell me all about it.

Thank you for your input!

Here are the general things that I took from all of your posts about proficiency awards:  P.S. 10 of you are missing this blog post

Many of you think it will be easier next year, because we’ve been through it once.  I agree!  Now we’ve got a lot of sample apps to look at that did well on the state level.

Start earlier – We may start earlier next year – but really – many of you are procrastinators and will wait until the last minute anyway.  If we start earlier, I will move up the due dates.  I think that will help all of us to have a little less stressful experience with the completion of the apps. Some suggested the value of entering data into AET on a regular basis so that the records are their for future applications.

Start earlier and spread due dates out more.

Many of you talked about the importance of having your records up to date in AET and working on them constantly, not just once or twice a year.

I need to teach more or provide more instruction.  Now that I know more about the process, it will be easier for me to help students more with what types of things to write.  I’ve also got more experience with the rubric – that will help us to capture points that we missed this year.

Only a few of you answered the question about if you could apply in other areas.  Of those that answered it, only 5 listed what areas they could compete in.

Some of you set goals like having more finalists than this year, two people set a specific goal of 20 finalists in 2017.  One person set the goal of 20-25 finalists.  Another goal is to submit more applications next year.  There was a suggestion that older members be required to complete 2 or 3 apps, depending on their years of FFA experience and time in their SAE.

I’ve gotten some decent suggestions on what to do with non-FFA folks while others work on proficiency apps.  I’ve got to think about this issue a bit more and formulate a plan.

Many of you said that you learned a great deal throughout the process.  Many said that you procrastinated a lot.  Some said they wish they had paid more attention in English – it would have helped with the writing. At least one of you said that you learned that you are really lazy!

What would have made your application more competitive:

Top answers included –

  • More photos – or photos in general
  • better captions
  • Proof-reading and editing your writing
  • not waiting until the last minute
  • making sure all the standards relate to the proficiency area you are applying in
  • One of you actually said you were glad that I made you do proficiencies!  WooHoo!

For today:

On your blog, address ALL of the following:

  • What CDE are you preparing for?
  • What should requirements be for making a State CDE Team?
  • Have you been invited to join a google classroom where all of our study materials are held?
  • If so, have you joined the classroom?
  • If not, send me an email and I’ll get you added to the appropriate classroom.
  • If you have no idea what CDE you want to try, check the rules here  You also received an email from me a week or so ago with descriptions of each CDE.
  • What are your plans for CDE preparation?
  • What are your goals for your performance in CDEs this year?
  • Have you found study resources independent of the ones that I have that you are using?  If so, provide links to them please.

How do we do this better?

Happy National FFA Week!

Many of you have asked how you placed in Proficiencies.  I’m leery to share exact results with you as they appear to be very fluid.  What I mean by that is that we’ve had people place that we didn’t know about originally, people moved from 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 1st, etc.  I don’t want you to be disappointed because I may have told you one thing and another gets announced on stage at Convention.

Digging into results a little deeper:  We have 12 finalists!  McCook Central had 50 some, Harrisburg tied with us at 12 – that makes our two chapters the ones who got the second most kids into the finals.  We also won our fare share of first places – at least with the results that I have access to.

good-better-best-sign

For today address the following on your blog:

  • How can we do this better next year?
  • How can I make proficiency award applications easier for you and less stressful for me?
  • Do you think you would be able to apply in more than one area? Please list those areas in your answer.
  • What help would you need to make that happen?
  • What are some realistic goals for our members with regard to proficiency awards next year?
  • How do we involve the other classes; Animal Science, Floriculture/Horticulture, Vet Science, and Biotechnology in proficiencies?  What do the non-FFA kids do while I’m working with the FFA folks on proficiency apps?
  • Tell me about your proficiency app experience – what did you learn?
  • What would have made your application more competitive?

Proficiency Award Wrap Up!

By 3:30 p.m. on the February 17th – Next week Wednesday, I need the following**:

__________ Printed and signed signature page

__________ All sections of the “checklist” say “Met” with the exception of the last two.

__________  Your personal page – printed

__________ an ok from you – preferably by email, that you are done and I can print your application on the color printer.

Feel free to help your neighbor by trading computers and helping to proof read their writing.  I’m trying to get through all of them, but some help would be awesome!

**For some of you, we’re on a case by case basis for this assignment.  Check with me if you are not sure what I’m expecting and requiring of you.

I’m pretty sure that we should celebrate being done with Proficiency Award Apps next week Friday.  How about breakfast in class?

SAE Agreements

The last thing we need to complete to attach to your Proficiency awards is an SAE agreement.  These are pretty simple to complete in AET.  For this assignment, you’ll only need to complete the agreements for those SAE activities that you’re using for your SAE.  For example – if you are applying in vegetable production – you’d need to complete the SAE plan for any activities that involve your growing or producing vegetables.

To complete  the plan, click on Profile, then Experience Manager.

Screen Shot 2016-02-08 at 9.54.52 AM

Within the SAE manager, click on the pencil in front of the experience or experiences that you are using in your proficiency application.

Screen Shot 2016-02-08 at 9.55.35 AM

So – this applicant is applying in ag processing.  So, we’ll click on the pencil in front of the Food Science – Canning experience.

Screen Shot 2016-02-08 at 9.57.16 AM

Work through the tabs at the top, typing information into the text box on the bottom.

Screen Shot 2016-02-08 at 11.01.52 AM

Once you have worked through all of the tabs, you should be done. Don’t forget to click SAVE after each entry!  When finished, click on the blue PDF Agreement link at the top.  Print the agreement and get signatures.  Your SAE agreement is due on February 16, 2016.   Keep working – we’ve only got about a week left of proficiency applications!

Personal Page, Resume, & Grants For Growing

Lots to read in today’s post.  Please read all the way to the end!

Personal Page and Resume

Each proficiency application has attachments that need to be included.  The two attachments required are an instructor’s statement – that one’s on me.  The second, is “your” personal page.

  • Attach one page of additional information, of your choice, supporting your application for this area. (i.e., Newspaper clippings, additional statements from employer, student work, etc.)
  • Write a personal story even with a little background on their family (especially if not a farm background) then talk about all phases of their SAE and how/what FFA activities they have enjoyed the most etc.
  • For some we will do ads, collages, certificates of attendance at marketing workshops, an additional letter from an employer, inventory pages for some breeding livestock, Newspaper articles scanned in to a page, etc.

For our purposes, we’ll do one page, single spaced, 12 pt font.  Talk about your SAE – all phases, not just the one in the proficiency app you’re working on (this way the personal page could be used for more than one area of proficiency apps.)  Talk about your FFA Experiences – things you’ve done, plan to do etc.  Talk about your future plans for education, SAE and FFA involvement.

We also need to spend some time working on your Resume for your proficiency app.  AET will build a lot of it, we just need to make sure you’ve got things entered.

I’m attaching two examples of personal pages and resume’s from former National Finalists.  Use them as a guide.

Personal page 1

Personal page 2

Your personal page will be due to me with your printed application on Tuesday, February 16, 2016.  This will give us the 17th to re-work anything that needs to be addressed prior to me taking them to Brookings for Judging on the morning of the 18th!

All of your picture pages (6) will need to be printed in color.  Once you’ve got those done let me know so that I can start printing!

Your application requires several signatures – yours, a parent, your ag teacher, principal, and most recent employer (that deals with the specific proficiency area you are competing in – this may be your parent again.) Print off the front page and get those signatures taken care of so we are not scrambling for them the week that they are due.

For your reference, here is the document that outlines all of the due dates for the proficiency application.

Proficiency Due Dates

Grants For Growing:

grantsforgrowing_landingpage

I received an email from folks at National FFA yesterday concerning the TSC Grants for Growing program.  To date, they have only received 160 applicants.  They have financing for 300+ grants at $500 each.  Here is what they say about the grants on the FFA Website:

What exactly is Grants for Growing?
Grants for Growing is a competitive grant process where chapters submit an application outlining a new or existing school agricultural project. The grants are to be used to further or boost current agricultural education programs/projects or to build new ones. The project should be sustaining, meaning not just a one year event. The program/project should live on to benefit future FFA members. These chapter grants will allow for a greater impact in local communities and enhance chapter learning experiences.
How do we apply?
Between Jan. 15 and Feb. 15 advisors will log in to FFA.org and complete the Grants for Growing grant application. To see the application requirements here

    • Program/Project title?
    • Describe, in detail, the project the chapter grant will fund?
    • How will this grant help to further your chapter’s agricultural education program?
    • Detailed Budget (review budget guidelines) – See below:
    • Can the Tractor Supply Company name be incorporated in your project?

Funding Guidelines

Allowable Expense Examples

Transportation to and from service sites
Educational outreach materials
Vegetation – Ex: fruits, vegetables, trees, seeds, etc.
Other expendable materials – Ex: chicks, feed, mulch, etc.
Small Equipment Purchases – Ex: tiller, tools, etc.
Portable storage

Non-Allowable Expense Examples

Stipends or scholarships to students or the chapter
Indirect costs (cost of administering the grant funds)
Food items/drives
Travel to or from state or national convention
T-shirts and giveaways
FFA dress

Categories to Include

Non-Expendable Equipment Costs

Items having a useful life of more than one year. Examples include small tools, tiller, etc.

Materials & Supplies

Expendable items having a useful life up to one year. Examples include educational outreach materials, seeds, soil, etc.

Marketing & Communication

Any materials used for advertising or publicizing the project. Examples include brochures, flyers, etc.

Travel

Costs to travel to sites related to project outcomes. Examples include travel to service sites, presentations, etc.
Miscellaneous

Any other anticipated costs that are not included above. Examples include, equipment rental, animal medicines, animal feed, etc.

The fundraising period will take place during FFA Week, Feb. 19– 28. During that time chapters are encouraged to volunteer a few hours and engage customers to help drive the sales of the paper emblems. Chapters are not required to participate in a store. All chapters are encouraged to apply even if there is no Tractor Supply store with in close proximity. Promotion of the event with social media, posters, broadcast and print may earn extra points toward the grant.

All we have to do is identify a project to spend the money on, describe how it will benefit the most students, what we plan to do after the money runs out to sustain it (if it is long term), and identify how TSC can be incorporated (if it can) into the project. A quick budget estimation for the project and you’re done. Easy way to get money for getting kids involved in FFA activities.

Any ideas?  I’ll write the grant, I just need your awesome ideas!  Please read through all of the rules etc. and make sure your idea fits the requirements.

What’s your assignment in all of this?  1. Work on your personal page and other areas of your proficiency app.  2.  Send me an email with a/some grant ideas that would fit the Grants For Growing criteria.  If you do this in a group – include all the names of the people brainstorming together in one email from one of you. Your email is due Monday, February 8, 2016.

Second Semester!

Congratulations Seniors, you graduate this year!

What causes you to lose respect for or stop respecting another person? Is it a poor choice they made, actions they’ve taken, lies they’ve told?  Have they completely changed their friend group and interests?  Did they quit something and leave you high and dry?  Have they simply changed so much over time that you no longer agree on deal-breaker issues?  Tell me all about it – remember, no “real” names if you’re telling me about people here.  You never know who may stumble upon your blog and then the word gets out that you wrote about so-and-so.  It just goes downhill from there, trust me!

Here’s some money, come get it!

images

We’re going to take a stab at Proficiency Awards this year.  Last year, McCook Central FFA Chapter went home from State Convention on Sunday night with more than $10,000 in students’ pockets!  I think some of that money needs to ride home with us!

There are 47 different areas.  The state awards cash prizes for the top three people in each of those areas.  First place – $250, Second place – $100, Third place – $50.  Many areas do not have three applicants in them!

You may apply in as many areas as you qualify in. Each area will require a separate application.

Here are the award areas for 2016.Award Areas

Here are descriptions for each area (these are from 2015, but that’s ok).Descriptions

Here are three sample Proficiency applications:

Placement App

Beef Entrepreneurship

Combined Placement & Entrepreneurship

We’ll be working on Proficiencies for the next month, a little at a time.

You are eligible to apply for proficiency awards throughout high school and during your first year of college or tech school.

Underclassmen, and those seniors who wish to apply again next year,  your application will just hang out in AET until this time next year!
